Ermenegildo Zegna’s Persian Saffron is made to incarnate the best saffron. First, in the foreground, i found the spicy sharpness of coriander and bergamot, instantly supported by spicy-woody hues. I would mention a warm cedar-sandalwood main accord (woody-milky) and an especially hot, slightly sweaty cumin, grounded into a spicy powder, as most evident. As the fragrance heat goes down, the characteristic features of saffron come through: the typical chemical, iodine and phenolic features appear on top of the main woody accord. At some point, i found the smell of patent leather boots (hello, safraleine), new rubber air balloons, dark honey and the barnyard smell of resinous oud oil in persian saffron’s rich shades…
If the dense oud oil, patchouli or chinese cedar oil would appear in this fragrance, it would turn into a typical, endless middle eastern fragrance. Sweet fruits and raspberries on the patent leather, which form the famous part of byredo black saffron, are also absent. Persian saffron is true to the natural saffron bitterness in a western form; well-bred, easy-to-wear and knowing when enough is enough.
