For 75 years, Edgar Allen Poe’s grave was the site of an appropriately dark and mysterious tradition: a lone figure, clad in top hat and cape, would visit the gravestone of the legendary author, raise a glass of cognac in a silent toast, and leave the rest of the bottle on the grave along with three carefully arranged roses. While the identity of the “Poe Toaster” was never revealed, his yearly visit inspired the creation of Nevermore, a stunningly atmospheric woodsy rose scent with an impressively haunting ethereal quality that the master of the macabre himself would surely have appreciated.
Nevermore opens amidst a graveyard shrouded in night- cool, ozonic atmosphere and earthy spices dance around the stones as we search for Poe’s final resting place. First, we find the rose, made gothic and mysterious by the rose oxyde’s cold, metallic veneer, yet there is a warm full-bodiedness lurking beneath the surface.
The cognac coaxes it out further, rich and heady, reminding us that our purpose here is not to mourn, but to honor. With a rich drydown of cedar and sandalwood fortifying us, we raise a glass under the moonlight and offer our respects.
