Texture plays a vital role here. The fragrance is immediately volupté, with silky orris butter and jasmine melting into a milky pudding of woods made faintly honeycomb-like with cinnamon and nutmeg. But the opening bristles with enough citrus and pepper to clear a cold, and the pimento and bay are sharp with heat, so the scent’s sparkle is never muffled by its creaminess. There are small touches of fruit and rose, too, the apricot-skin fruitiness of davana creating the impression of rose where none is listed. So far, so bright and creamy. But in the drydown, the tone of the perfume tilts towards the shadows, darkening with an earthy, anisic myrrh, patchouli, and cedar until, finally, a tendril of incense smoke draws everything under its crepuscular veil.
