For the ninth edition of Amouage’s Library series, creative director Christopher Chong has again dived deep into the masterpieces of modern art and culture to create a fragrance inspired by legendary soprano Maria Callas’ portrayal of Violetta in Verdi’s classic opera of love, longing, and sacrifice, La Traviata.
With each phase of Opus IX based on an act from the opera, the opening represents Violetta’s raucous Act I party with a heady rush of peppery florals led by a sweet, resonant camellia accord and heady jasmine: joyous, carefree and hedonistic. Act II, where Violetta abandons her socialite lifestyle to run away with her lover Alfredo, is substantive, rich and bucolic: woods, leather, and beeswax represent their improbable happiness in the simple countryside, and ultimately the pain of their forced parting as Violetta’s past catches up to her, forcing her to drive away the man she loves. Act III, the drydown, sings of pain and loss in a rich, animalic drydown that feels passionate, bittersweet, and redemptive.
But for all of Opus IX’s complexity, it never for a moment presents itself as overly heavy or unwearable – in fact, its gorgeous, ever-evolving composition maintains a loveliness and a unisex suitability every bit as compelling as its operatic inspiration. One masterpiece deserves another, and in that spirit, we think even the great Maria Callas would look fondly upon Opus IX.
